Put All of Your Eggs in One Basket

The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field. (Matthew 13:44)

While teaching one day, Jesus told a story of a man who was busy working in a field. He was toiling away plowing, when he stumbled across an amazing treasure.

He was shocked and could not believe his good fortune. Immediately, he recognized the value of the treasure and wanted to do whatever possible to keep it. Now that he knew it existed, he simply had to have it.

But anything of value is worth sacrificing to get it. This treasure is the most valuable thing he had ever run across, so to get it he needed to sacrifice everything he had.

Isn’t that how sacrifice works usually? If we want good grades, we study hard and put in the hours. If we want the promotion at work, we go the extra mile. 

When we invest heavily in the relationship with spouses and kids, our relationships are better. When we invest in our retirement funds, we have more freedom and flexibility when we are older.

If you don’t really care about something, you don’t put in much effort to attain it. People who don’t think about the future spend everything they earn. Self-centered people fail to put time into the relationships that matter most. When we encounter something really worthwhile, we invest our time and attention.

This man Jesus spoke of knew the value of the treasure, so of course he sacrificed everything he had to get it. Anything short of this would have been foolish. This treasure was a sure thing, so he did whatever he had to do to get it.

Jesus sacrificed everything for us because He knew our worth. Shouldn’t we do the same? In your relationship with Jesus, you don’t diversify. You go all in. Just like the man who found the treasure, you put all your eggs into that one basket.

Lord, thank You for sacrificing everything for me. Forgive me when I put anything else above my relationship with You. Help me to see the true value of this amazing relationship with You and take action!
